The Banana Bacteria Wilt (BBW)

Banana Bacteria wilt is one of the most dangerous diseases of bananas affecting farmers in Uganda.

Plants affected by banana bacterial wilt, look unhealthy+ stunted. Leaves are pale and may not immediately turn yellow, fruits ripen early when bunch is still young; have a wilted male bud, yellow + wilted young leaves. Fruits have brown stains when cut. The inside of the stem is black when cut and a grey/ white/yellow liquid is seen when stem is pressed + roots rot.

To control, uproot and burn the affected plant and bury or cut off the male bud from the plant. Tools used must be washed in Jik or heated in fire to prevent spread

To prevent banana bacterial wilt avoid planting in affected areas. Use resistant varieties. Before planting, mix 20 litres of water with 4 tablespoons of detergent (OMO). Remove roots from the sucker and soak 4-5 suckers in mixture overnight. To control, destroy infected plants and nematodes which spread disease. Seek advice of extension worker.

Do not plant suckers in the same area for at least 3 months. In case it persisits,consult your local Ag. Extension worker for more advise.

    I will try the methods given because all my banana plants are gone
